VIETRI SUL MARE

From Vietri to Cetara and Maiori: two stops along the coast

Vietri sul Mare is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast, and from here the road begins to climb and curve eastward. The two towns that follow, Cetara and Maiori, have different but complementary characters: the first is a seafaring village gathered around the port, the second is an open town, with one of the longest beaches on the coast.

The first stretch of the coast

After leaving Vietri, the Amalfi road winds between rocky walls dropping steeply into the sea and terraced slopes suspended above the water. The landscape changes quickly: the settlements grow smaller, the coastline more vertical, and at every bend a new inlet opens up.

Cetara and Maiori are the natural first stops for those who want to continue beyond Vietri without going too far. They can be visited in a single day, or you can choose one or the other depending on your preferred pace.

How to get from one town to the next

The simplest connections are the local buses that run along the coastal road and serve all the towns. Those arriving by train get off at Vietri station, on the line to Salerno, and from there can continue by bus.

During some periods of the year, there are also boat connections between the ports of the Coast: they are a pleasant way to see the coast from the sea, but they depend on the season and weather conditions. Timetables, frequency, and service days should always be checked on the official websites of the companies and the Municipality before departure.

The coastal road is narrow and busy in the most crowded months: allowing plenty of time helps you enjoy the trip without rushing.

Cetara, the fishing village

Cetara has always been a seaside village, linked to fishing and in particular to tuna and anchovies. The tradition of colatura di alici, the amber-colored seasoning born right here on this part of the coast, clearly reflects the town’s relationship with the sea.

The heart of the town is the port, with boats pulled ashore and nets spread out. Here the atmosphere is less touristy than elsewhere: you walk among narrow alleys, light-colored houses, and stairways climbing toward the mountain.

What to see in Cetara

The church of San Pietro

The main church, with its majolica-covered dome, recalls the ceramic tradition that in Vietri can be seen in every sign and decoration. The bell tower and facade dominate the square near the sea.

The tower and the seafront

On the promontory closing the bay stands a historic watchtower, part of the coastal defense system. A walk along the seafront and the pier allows you to observe port life and the shape of the coast.

The beach is small and intimate, suited to a short stop rather than a full day at the sea.

Maiori, the long beach of the coast

Maiori stands out immediately for its wide, continuous shoreline, among the largest on the coast, flanked by a seafront with palm trees and a promenade. Behind the beach, the town develops on the flat, in the valley: a rare case on a coast made mostly of slopes.

The main street, with its arcades, is the ideal place for a leisurely stroll among shops and cafés.

History and views in Maiori

The Collegiata di Santa Maria a Mare stands on a hill, reached by a staircase, and also has a majolica dome visible from afar. Climbing up rewards you with a beautiful view of the town and the bay.

Above the built-up area are the remains of the castle of San Nicola de Thoro-Plano, connected to the medieval history of the place, while in the municipal area you can visit the ancient abbey of Santa Maria de Olearia, carved into a cavity in the rock and guardian of frescoes.

For trails and less accessible places, such as the abbey or the Sentiero dei Limoni that connects Maiori to Minori, check first with the Municipality or the local tourist board: opening hours and trail conditions may change.

An itinerary idea

A balanced option is to leave Vietri in the morning, reach Cetara for a walk around the port and a stop in town, then continue to Maiori in the afternoon for the beach and the climb to the Collegiata. The return to Vietri and the station requires a bit of leeway: check the last connections of the day.

Comfortable shoes, water, and some flexibility with schedules make all the difference, because the Coast rewards those who are not in a hurry.
