How to Get to Amalfi and Get Around the Amalfi Coast

Amalfi has no railway station, and the coastal road is narrow and busy. Choosing the right way to travel makes the difference between a relaxing journey and hours lost in traffic.

By ferry: the most scenic way

In the warmer months Amalfi is connected by sea with Salerno, Positano, Capri and other destinations. Companies and timetables change during the year, and in winter the number of sailings is reduced: always check the updated timetables before you leave.

The ferry avoids the traffic on the coastal road and is also a small scenic tour of the coast.

From Naples airport

From the airport you can reach Salerno and then continue by ferry or by bus, or reach Sorrento and continue along the coast from there. With luggage and family, the simplest option is a private transfer that takes you all the way to your hotel.

By train to Salerno

Salerno station is well connected with the main Italian cities. From Salerno you continue to Amalfi by ferry, by bus or with a transfer.

By bus along the coastal road

Local buses connect Amalfi with Positano, Sorrento, Ravello and Salerno. The terminus is near the port. In summer the buses can be very crowded and journey times get longer because of traffic.

By car: what to know

The coastal road is spectacular but demanding, with tight bends and tricky encounters with buses. In Amalfi parking spaces are few and expensive, and the town center is largely pedestrian. At certain times traffic restrictions may be in force: check before you leave.

Which option to choose based on your trip

With large suitcases

Ferries and local buses have limited space for luggage, and from the port or the bus stop you may have to walk up stairs. A private transfer to your hotel is the most convenient solution.

As a family

With small children and strollers, the ferry is more relaxing than the bus along the coastal road. For transfers from the airport or station, a transfer avoids changing vehicles.

On a tight budget

Local buses and ferries are the cheapest options. However, consider waiting times and the chance of finding crowded vehicles in high season.

To explore freely

A scooter lets you visit Ravello, the viewpoints and other towns independently. You need a license valid for the category of vehicle and great care on the road.

Accessibility and reduced mobility

The center of Amalfi is largely flat along the main street, but many side streets, churches and accommodations can only be reached by stairs. Anyone with mobility difficulties should ask the accommodation for precise information before booking and consider a transfer that gets as close as possible to the destination.

Getting around once you arrive

On foot

The center of Amalfi and Atrani can be visited on foot.

By Vespa or scooter

To reach viewpoints, Ravello or Positano independently, a scooter is nimble and easier to park than a car.

By boat

For Positano or Capri, the sea is often the most convenient choice.
