Marina Grande, the town-centre beach
This is the main beach, just steps from Piazza Duomo and the port. There are stretches with equipped beach clubs and free stretches. It is the most convenient option, but in summer it is also the most crowded: arrive early to find a spot.
Duoglio Beach
It lies west of the centre and can be reached on foot by descending a long staircase from the main coastal road, or by sea when the seasonal shuttle boat service is running. It is quieter than Marina Grande and the water is very clear.
Santa Croce, a cove best reached by boat
Just past Duoglio, Santa Croce beach is tucked beneath the rocks and is mainly reached from the sea. The name comes from an old chapel in the area. It is one of the loveliest stops for those exploring the coast by boat.
Atrani Beach
A few minutes' walk from Amalfi, Atrani beach opens right in front of the village. It is a good alternative for those looking for a more intimate atmosphere without needing any transport.
The Emerald Grotto
It is located in Conca dei Marini, west of Amalfi. It is not a beach, but a sea cave famous for the emerald-green light of its water. It is visited inside on small rowing boats; it can be reached from the sea or from the main coastal road. Opening depends on sea conditions.
When to go to the beach and what to know
The bathing season runs roughly from May to October; in high summer the equipped beach clubs in Amalfi are in great demand and it is advisable to book sun loungers and umbrellas in advance, especially on weekends in July and August.
The sea along the Coast is deep just a few metres from the shore: those who are not strong swimmers should stay close to the beach. With a south-westerly wind the sea can quickly become rough and some beaches reachable only by boat become inaccessible.
- Bring water shoes and a mask: you can see fish among the rocks just a few metres from the shore.
- Respect the areas reserved for swimmers and the buoys marking the lanes used for launching boats.
- Do not leave litter and do not take away pebbles or shells: the small beaches of the Coast are fragile.
- During the hottest hours look for shade: many beaches are exposed to the sun for much of the day.
How to choose: beach or boat
For those short on time
Marina Grande or Atrani: no transfers and services close by.
For those who want clear water and tranquillity
The easiest way to reach coves like Santa Croce and swim away from the crowds is by boat, private or in a small group. The skipper knows the best spots based on the day's wind and sea.
