AMALFI

The Best Views and Photo Spots in Amalfi

Amalfi is photogenic at any hour, but certain viewpoints and certain times of day make all the difference. Here is where to go and when, with a few tips for better photos.

The pier: the classic postcard

From the tip of the pier you can frame the whole town: white houses, the Cathedral's bell tower and the mountains behind. The best light is early in the morning and in the late afternoon, when the sun is not directly overhead.

The Cathedral steps

From below, the facade fills the frame; from the top of the steps you can photograph the lively square. To have few people in your shot, the only real solution is to arrive at dawn or late in the evening.

Pogerola and the viewpoints along the state road

Heading up toward Pogerola or driving along the state road toward Positano, you will find lay-bys with views from above. Stop only where stopping is permitted and safe: the road is narrow and busy.

The Torre dello Ziro

From the path that climbs up from Pontone you can see Amalfi on one side and Atrani on the other. It is one of the most spectacular spots in the area, and it can only be reached on foot.

From the sea

Many of the Coast's most famous views can only be seen from the water: the town climbing up the rock, the coastal towers, the caves. A boat trip at golden hour yields the most evocative photos.

A photo day, hour by hour

Dawn

The pier and the Marina Grande beach are almost deserted. The light comes from the east and lights up the white houses and the bell tower: it is the best moment for the classic photo of the town.

Morning

Climb the Cathedral steps before the shops open, then move on to the Valle dei Mulini, where the shade of the valley keeps the light soft even in mid-morning.

Afternoon

It is time for the sea: from the boat you photograph the coast with the sun behind you, and the caves offer very intense color contrasts.

Sunset

Atrani, a few minutes away on foot, faces west and receives the last light of the day: the little square and the beach turn golden.

Drones and rules to follow

The use of drones on the Coast is governed by national and European regulations and may be restricted by local bans, especially over built-up areas, crowded beaches and protected areas. Before flying a drone, check the rules in force and any authorizations required.

When photographing people, always ask permission from anyone who appears in the foreground, and respect private property, terraces and the gardens of homes.

A professional photo shoot

If you want a high-quality keepsake, for a proposal, an anniversary or a family trip, a local photographer knows the places, the best hours of light and the less crowded spots.

Quick tips

- Avoid the middle of the day in summer: harsh light and too many people. - Bring a cloth for your lens: sea salt settles quickly. - Respect people's privacy and private areas.
