Why go down on foot
Anyone arriving in Ravello by bus or car sees the coast from above and thinks of the sea as something far away. The stepped paths change that perception: in a short time you go from the viewpoint to the terraced fields, from the dry-stone walls to the first lanes of the coast.
It is the way local people once moved between the upper and lower parts, and the very construction of the routes tells the story: stone stairways, ramps, passages among vegetable gardens and scattered houses.
The routes: Minori, Atrani and Amalfi
From the center of Ravello, the stepped paths descend in several directions and lead to three main destinations:
- Minori, the closest as the crow flies and best for those looking for a beach
- Atrani, gathered around its little square by the sea
- Amalfi, larger and with more connections for the return
The routes intertwine and some sections are shared. For this reason, it is best to decide your destination before setting out and keep an eye on the junctions along the way, because a wrong turn can make the walk longer.

Torello, the halfway stop
The route passes through the hamlet of Torello, a small cluster of houses surrounded by greenery that effectively marks the halfway point of the walk. Here the landscape is different from Ravello: fewer villas and gardens, more cultivated countryside and sudden glimpses of the sea.
It is a good place to catch your breath, drink some water and check that you are heading in the right direction, especially if you want to continue toward Minori rather than Atrani or Amalfi.
What the walk is like
The main stretch is a long sequence of steps, downhill on the way out and uphill on the way back. No high-mountain equipment is needed, but a minimum level of fitness is, especially for the knees.
The steps can be uneven, worn by time, or slippery after rain. On the narrower sections it is easy to meet other hikers or people coming back up with shopping bags: you proceed calmly and give way to one another.
Who it suits
It is a walk suitable for those used to walking, including families with children who are not too young, provided they are kept close on exposed sections. If you have mobility difficulties, it is better to choose other options.

What to pack
Only a few things, but chosen well:
- shoes with a treaded sole, preferably closed: sandals are not suitable for the steps
- enough water, especially in summer
- a hat and sun protection: some sections are very exposed
- swimsuit and light towel, if the goal is to swim in Minori or Amalfi
- a light jacket outside the warm months
A practical tip: setting off early in the morning, when the sun is lower and the path is cooler, leaves more time for the sea and makes the return less tiring.
The return: bus or climb
Once at the sea, you can decide whether to walk back up or use public transport. The easiest way is to take the bus from Amalfi, which connects the coast to Ravello. Minori and Atrani are close to Amalfi and allow for a fairly flexible return plan.
Walking back up the steps is doable, but it takes energy: after a day of sun and swimming, the climb can be demanding. Many prefer to go down on foot and return by bus, saving effort without losing the pleasure of the route.

An idea for the day
A balanced plan is to descend in the morning, spend a few hours by the sea in Minori or Amalfi, take a stroll along the seafront or through the lanes, and return to Ravello in the afternoon. If you go down as far as Atrani, it is worth stopping in the little square and continuing on foot to Amalfi.
The view from the path changes with the light: in the morning the slopes are clearer, while late in the afternoon the sea becomes softer. Allowing some margin in the return time helps avoid rushing.
Check before you go
The condition of the paths can change: landslides, works, temporary closures or bad weather may make a section impassable. Before setting out, it is best to check with the Municipality of Ravello, the local tourist office or the official sources for the area’s trails.
The same applies to bus times and services: they should be checked on the public transport operators’ channels. In case of heavy rain or intense heat, it is better to postpone.
