Capri in One Day from the Amalfi Coast: Itinerary

Capri is close enough to the Amalfi Coast to visit in a single day, but rich enough to force you to choose. This itinerary does not try to fit everything into a few hours: it suggests a sustainable pace, with a morning in Capri and an afternoon in Anacapri.

The principle: fewer stops, more island

Those arriving for the day have one fixed limit: the return boat. It is worth starting from there: before organizing any visit, check the outbound and return services and mentally set a safety margin to get back to the port without rushing.

On an island where every move involves slopes, stairs, and queues for public transport, a well-run day means choosing two or three things and doing them at a calm pace. The rest can wait for a second trip.

From the Coast to the island

In season, sea connections to Capri also depart from the Amalfi Coast. They are not available year-round, though, and schedules change depending on the period and sea conditions: check days and times on the official websites of the shipping companies and ports before deciding.

If there are no convenient departures from where you are staying, the alternative is to reach Sorrento or Naples, from which ferries and hydrofoils connect to the island. Consider, however, how much time the overland transfer costs you: on a single day, every hour counts.

Marina Grande and the climb to the Piazzetta

You disembark at Marina Grande, the island's main port. From here, the funicular reaches Capri in a few minutes and emerges near Piazza Umberto I, the famous Piazzetta, which for many is the heart of island life.

It is a good first stop, especially before the crowd fills the tables: look at the square, watch the flow of people, and then head off into the alleyways. Capri is at its best just after you leave the most beaten paths.

Morning in Capri: gardens, alleyways, and the Charterhouse

From the Piazzetta, a walk leads to the Gardens of Augustus, flowered terraces with an open view of the Faraglioni, the island's three emblematic rocks. From here you can also look toward Via Krupp, the switchback path carved into the rock: access may be closed, so check official communications before counting on it.

Near the gardens stands the Certosa di San Giacomo, a quiet and intimate stop that balances the more worldly atmosphere of the center. Before heading up to Anacapri, leave some time to wander aimlessly through the lanes: it is the most authentic part of the morning.

Afternoon in Anacapri

Anacapri is the island's other municipality and has a more intimate, less crowded character. To get there, you can use the public transport that links the two centers: check on site or through official channels for frequency and capacity, especially on busier days.

The two stops to choose from

  • Villa San Michele, Axel Munthe's house-garden, with its panoramic position.
  • The church of San Michele, famous for its majolica floor.

If the weather is good and you have energy, the chairlift goes up Monte Solaro, from where the view embraces the island and the gulf. The operation of the lift depends on weather and maintenance: find out before including it in your plan.

A walking variant

Those who love walking can replace part of the afternoon with a stroll toward the Arco Naturale or toward Villa Jovis, the residence of Emperor Tiberius. These are routes that require time and suitable shoes: on a single day it is better to choose one and forget the idea of doing everything. The walks have a dedicated article, which we refer you to for details.

What to save for next time

Some experiences fit poorly into a day trip. The Blue Grotto can only be visited by boat in calm seas, so it cannot be a fixed point in the program. Marina Piccola and the Punta Carena lighthouse also deserve an unhurried visit, perhaps with a longer stay.

It is a healthy choice: leaving something off the list is the best way to have a reason to come back.

The return

Allow enough time in advance to get back to Marina Grande: the funicular or bus, possible queues, and boarding take more minutes than you might expect. If the sea is rough, connections may be changed or suspended: check the official notices during the day, not just in the morning.

Frequently asked questions

Is one day enough to see Capri?

It is enough for a well-made taste of it: the Piazzetta, the Gardens of Augustus, and an afternoon in Anacapri. For longer walks, boat trips, and beaches, you need more time.

Where do ferries to Capri depart from if I'm on the Coast?

In season there are connections also from the Amalfi Coast, but they are not active all year. Alternatively, you can reach Sorrento or Naples. Always check days and times on the official websites.

Is it worth planning the Blue Grotto on a day trip?

It is better to consider it an optional extra. The boat visit is possible only in calm seas, so it cannot be guaranteed in advance.
