A trail suspended between Agerola and Positano
The Path of the Gods connects the hamlet of Bomerano, on the Agerola plateau, to Nocelle, a small village above Positano. It runs along the seaward slope of the Monti Lattari, among limestone cliffs, terraces, and Mediterranean scrub, with views stretching over the gulf and toward the horizon of Capri.
The name says a lot about the experience: you walk for a long time very high above the sea, in a vertical landscape that changes at every turn.
Why start from Agerola
Bomerano is located at about 600 meters above sea level, so those who start here tackle a route that overall descends toward Nocelle. There are still uphill and downhill stretches, but the effort is gentler than in the opposite direction.
There is also the advantage of an early arrival: the plateau is cool and bright, and a coffee before setting off is a good way to get into the rhythm of the walk. Bomerano can be reached by bus from Amalfi and from Castellammare di Stabia; schedules should always be checked on official transport sources.

The route, section by section
The start from Bomerano
You leave the built-up area and head onto lanes and mule tracks, following the trail signage. The first steps cross cultivated areas and dry-stone walls, with glimpses that anticipate the panorama.
The high section
The central part is the most spectacular: the trail skirts the mountainside, alternating wider stretches with narrower, rockier ones. Here you’ll find panoramic points over Positano, the Li Galli islands, and Capri, as well as rock formations such as the so-called Grotta del Biscotto.
The approach to Nocelle
Toward the end, the landscape becomes more wooded and opens onto the valley above Positano. Arrival in Nocelle closes the walk in a quiet village, made up of clustered houses and open views of the sea.
How long it takes and when to go
Allow half a day for the walk, including photo stops and a break: the actual time depends on your pace and trail conditions. It is better to start early, so you have full light on arrival and time to organize the return.
The in-between seasons, spring and autumn, are generally the most comfortable: mild temperatures and clear light. In summer the sun on the exposed side can be intense, so it is better to set off earlier. After heavy rain or strong winds, consider postponing.
What to bring
The ground is uneven, with stones, roots, and a few steps, so trekking shoes with good soles are necessary. The rest of the backpack can stay simple:
- enough water, because there are no certain refill points along the route
- sun protection: hat and sunscreen
- a light jacket, because the weather can change at altitude
- a snack and a bag for rubbish
- a charged phone and, if possible, a map downloaded in advance
Walking poles can help on longer descents. Those who suffer from vertigo should keep in mind that some sections are exposed: proceed calmly, without rushing.
Arriving in Nocelle: how to get back
From Nocelle, you can descend to Positano along a long staircase, a choice that rewards you with continuous views of the village but is felt in the legs. Alternatively, there are public or local transport connections to Positano: schedules and availability change with the season and should be checked in advance.
From Positano, the return to Amalfi and Agerola is arranged with public transport or other means. Before leaving, plan your return, especially at the end of the day, when services may be less frequent.
Respect for the trail and official sources
The route crosses a delicate natural environment, part of the protected area of the Monti Lattari. Staying on the path, not picking plants, taking rubbish back down, and not disturbing animals are simple gestures that protect the landscape.
The condition of the trail can change because of landslides, maintenance, or weather conditions. Before setting off, consult the updated information from municipalities, park authorities, and local hiking associations, and if in doubt ask people who live in the area.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Path of the Gods suitable for everyone?
It is a hiking route that requires a minimum level of fitness, suitable shoes, and attention on exposed sections. It is not technical, but the uneven ground and length should be considered, especially with children or people not used to walking.
Is it better to start from Agerola or Nocelle?
Starting from Bomerano, in Agerola, is the most common choice because the route overall descends toward Nocelle and is less tiring. From the opposite side, there is more uphill elevation gain.
How can I check whether the trail is passable?
Consult official sources: municipalities, the park authority, and local hiking associations publish notices about closures and work. Also check the weather forecast the day before and on the morning itself.
