Two beaches, two ways to enjoy the sea
On the Amalfi Coast, the sea is earned, and in Praiano this is more evident than anywhere else. The town is spread along the slope, steeply above the water, and its beaches are small coves carved out between the rock walls.
Marina di Praia and Gavitella are close, but they are not alike. The first is a lived-in landing place, with boats and the habits of a seaside village. The second is a more intimate corner, reached with a walk down on foot or by boat.
Marina di Praia: the fishermen’s bay
Marina di Praia is a small cove set between the rocks, historically linked to the life of fishermen. That feeling is still there today: the atmosphere is more like a little harbor than an equipped beach, with boats right by the shore and the rock walls as a backdrop.
The beach is small and, as often happens in these parts, made more of pebbles and coarse sand than fine sand. The seabed drops off quickly and the water, on calm days, is clear. Because the bay is narrow, space can get limited in the middle hours of summer: arriving early helps.

A walk around the bay
Marina di Praia is also a place to look at, not only to use for a swim. On the coast stands the Torre a Mare, one of the ancient watchtowers that dot the Amalfi shoreline, a witness to a time when from these rocks people scanned the horizon for suspicious ships.
It is worth stopping for a few minutes at the edge of the cove and watching how the bay fits into the rock. It is one of the most recognizable images of Praiano, and it conveys well how vertical the town is.
Gavitella: steps on the way down, sun until evening
The Gavitella beach is reached by a long staircase or from the sea. It is not a destination for those looking for easy access: the descent is part of the experience, and the climb back up at the end of the day is felt in the legs.
In return, Gavitella offers a quieter atmosphere and a valuable feature: it stays sunlit until evening. On a stretch of coast where many coves fall into shadow early because of the cliffs, this is a real advantage for those who like to stay on the beach in the late afternoon.
Those arriving by sea, on an excursion or a boat transfer, avoid the stairs but should still check in advance the sea conditions and the landing arrangements.

Which one to choose?
The choice depends on the kind of day you have in mind.
Marina di Praia if...
- you prefer a short descent and a flexible stop, even just for a quick swim
- you are interested in the authentic side of the seaside village
- you are traveling with people who struggle with many steps
Gavitella if...
- you want a more secluded beach
- you want sun until evening
- you are not put off by the staircase and the final climb back up
Nothing prevents you from combining them on different days: they are two sides of the same stretch of coast.
What to put in your bag
Since the seabed and shores are mostly pebbly, rock shoes are useful. For Gavitella, comfortable footwear for the stairs, drinking water and sun protection are also needed, because the exposure is long and the final climb comes when you are already tired.
Beach services, the availability of loungers or bars, and access arrangements vary from season to season: it is best to check locally in advance or with the local tourist offices, rather than taking them for granted.
Respect for the place and common sense
The bays of Praiano are small and fragile. Taking your rubbish away, avoiding blocking the spaces used by fishermen at Marina di Praia, and not getting close to the rock walls after rough seas or rain are simple gestures that make a difference.
Before going down, check the sea forecast and any municipal ordinances on bathing and access to the paths. Conditions can change quickly, and official sources remain the most reliable reference.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get to Gavitella beach?
You get there on foot by a long staircase or from the sea. Since the climb back up is demanding, it is wise to be prepared and to check the conditions of the route with the municipality or tourist offices.
Are Praiano’s beaches sandy?
In general they are small coves, with pebbles and coarse sand rather than fine sand, as is common along much of the coast. Rock shoes are recommended.
Which beach is best for late afternoon?
Gavitella is known for staying sunlit until evening. The advice to check sea and access conditions before going down still applies.
