From Minori to Ravello on Foot: Stairway Ascent

Amalfi Coast landscape

Minori sits by the sea and Ravello on the ridge, and between the two towns run ancient stepped paths through terraces, gardens, and lemon groves. It is a walk that calls for trained legs and a bit of preparation, but it rewards you with the coastal landscape at its most authentic. Here’s how to approach it sensibly.

An ascent between sea and terraces

The difference in elevation between the seafront of Minori and Ravello is considerable, and the routes overcome it in their own way: with stairways, paved ramps, and mule-track sections, as in the days when links between the coast and the heights depended on feet and pack animals.

This is not a flat scenic stroll like the Lemon Path toward Maiori, which we cover in a separate article. Here you climb decisively, and the reward is a constant change in perspective: the village shrinks below you, the beach becomes a crescent, the horizon widens.

Going up or down: choosing the direction

The most natural direction for those starting from Minori is uphill: you begin at sea level, with fresh legs, and arrive in Ravello with the chance to stop in the square, rest, and calmly decide on the return.

Those who prefer to save their breath can reach Ravello by bus and descend on foot toward Minori. The descent is less tiring for the heart, but on the long steps it puts pressure on knees and ankles, especially if the stone is damp. Assess your condition, not just the convenience.

Minori — Going up or down: choosing the direction

What you encounter along the way

The route alternates shaded stretches and open sections. You walk beside the dry-stone walls that support the terraces, among lemons, vegetable gardens, small farmhouses, and sudden glimpses of the gulf.

The rhythm of the steps

The steps are irregular, sometimes worn by time, sometimes covered with leaves. It is best to climb at a steady pace, without rushing, allowing yourself breaks where the path opens onto the view.

Silence and details

As you climb, the sounds of the coastal road fade. What remains is the wind among the plants, an occasional distant voice, the scent of citrus during the seasons when they are in fruit.

How to prepare

A short outing on paper should not be underestimated. A few essential precautions:

  • shoes with a treaded sole and good grip: flat sneakers are a bad idea on polished stone;
  • enough water, because there are no guaranteed refill points along the path;
  • a hat and sun protection in the warm season, a light jacket in the shoulder seasons;
  • telescopic trekking poles, especially useful on the way down;
  • a light backpack with a simple snack.

In the hottest months, choose the least sultry hours of the day; in case of rain or wet stone, postpone.

Arriving in Ravello

Arriving in Ravello on foot gives the visit a different flavor. The town, resting on the ridge, is known for its intimate atmosphere, its Duomo, and its historic villas with gardens overlooking the sea, celebrated by artists and musicians over the centuries.

After the climb, the best way to enjoy Ravello is to take it slowly: a stop in the square, a walk to a viewpoint, a look down over the coast you have just left. If you want to enter the gardens or monuments, check opening times and access details in advance through official channels.

The return to Minori

You have two options for the return. The first is to retrace the steps downhill, bearing in mind that they require care and time. The second is to take the SITA bus from Ravello toward the coast and continue to Minori, an excellent solution if you are tired or if daylight is fading.

Runs, stops, and frequency vary by season and may change: always check the operator’s website or ticket offices and information points before planning your return.

Safety and respect for the area

The paths of the Coast are living places: landslides, heavy rain, or farming work can alter their passability. Before setting out, consult the communications of the Municipality, the Regional Park of the Lattari Mountains, or other official sources on the state of the trails.

As you walk, you cross cultivated land: stay on the trail, do not pick fruit, and do not climb over the walls, which are a fundamental part of the landscape. Take your rubbish back down, leave gates as you found them, and greet those you meet along the way: here that is still customary.

Frequently asked questions

Is the route from Minori to Ravello suitable for everyone?

It is a continuous climb on steps and steep sections, so it requires a minimum of training and suitable shoes. It is not recommended for those with mobility difficulties or who suffer from vertigo; small children should be watched carefully.

Is it better to hike up and take the bus down?

For many people this is the most convenient combination: you tackle the climb while fresh and return by SITA bus. Check runs and stops in advance on official sources, as they may vary.

How do I know if the trail is passable?

Check the communications from the Municipality and the bodies that manage the trails, especially after heavy rain. If the ground is wet or there are reports of problems, it is better to postpone.
