AMALFI GUIDE & BOOK

Sorrento

Overlooking the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius, Sorrento combines an elegant old town, two marinas, the scent of lemons and the gateway to the Sorrento Peninsula and the Amalfi Coast.

DON'T MISS

Piazza Tasso

20 min

The heart of the town, named after the poet Torquato Tasso, who was born in Sorrento. From here the main street, the old town and the road down to Marina Piccola branch off.

Look over the balustrade at the side of the square: you can see the Vallone dei Mulini.

Level area but with heavy traffic.

Corso Italia

45 min

The main street crosses the town with shops, cafés and the Cathedral of Saints Philip and James with its arched bell tower.

Visit the Cathedral for its inlaid woodwork, a Sorrento craft tradition.

Level street with pavements.

Centro storico

1 hour

Narrow lanes on a grid of Roman origin, the frescoed Sedile Dominova and Via San Cesareo, among limoncello, ceramics and inlaid-wood workshops.

The most authentic craft workshops are in the inner side streets.

Mostly level and pedestrian.

Marina Grande

1–2 hours

The old fishing village, with colourful boats pulled up on the shore and seafood restaurants by the water. It is not the ferry port.

Ideal for a sunset dinner; walk down from the centre.

Walk down with stairs and steep ramps.

Marina Piccola

Sorrento's port, where ferries and hydrofoils arrive and depart. On either side are small beach clubs on wooden platforms.

To reach the centre you can use the road, the stairs or the lift up to the Villa Comunale.

Significant climb to the centre: consider the lift or a taxi.

Villa Comunale

30 min

The public garden on the cliff, next to San Francesco, with a terrace overlooking the Gulf of Naples and Vesuvius.

At sunset the view of Vesuvius is the finest in town.

Level route; paid lift down to Marina Piccola.

Chiostro di San Francesco

20 min

A 14th-century cloister with interlaced Arab-style arches, wrapped in greenery and often used for concerts and events.

Combine it with the nearby Villa Comunale: they are a few steps apart.

Vallone dei Mulini

10 min

A deep green gorge in the middle of town, with the ruins of an old mill overgrown with vegetation.

It is viewed from above on Via Fuorimura: the bottom of the gorge cannot be visited.

Punti panoramici sul Golfo

Besides the Villa Comunale, the Piazza della Vittoria viewpoint and the area around Capo di Sorrento, with the Roman ruins of the Bagni della Regina Giovanna, open up views of the Gulf and Naples.

The Bagni della Regina Giovanna are reached by a downhill path: wear comfortable shoes.

The path to Capo di Sorrento is unpaved and sloping.

Penisola Sorrentina

Half day

Between Massa Lubrense and Sant'Agata sui Due Golfi the peninsula overlooks both the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno, all the way to the Punta Campanella marine reserve.

Narrow hilly roads: drive calmly and use authorised car parks.

Escursioni verso la Costiera

From Sorrento the road crosses the peninsula and descends towards Positano and Amalfi along the Amalfi Drive; in season the coast can also be reached by sea.

Our scooters, Vespas, cars and boats depart from Amalfi: get there first by bus, ferry or transfer.

Long, winding road, very busy in summer.
