AMALFI GUIDE & BOOK

Positano

The vertical village: pastel houses facing the sea, the majolica dome, two beaches and some of Italy's most scenic trails.

DON'T MISS

Spiaggia Grande

1–2 hours

The main beach at the foot of the village, with dark pebbles, beach clubs and free areas. Ferries and boats dock here.

Water shoes help on the pebbles; in summer arrive early to find a spot.

Reached from the village via stairs and steep descents.

Fornillo

1–2 hours

Positano's second beach, smaller and quieter, reached by a scenic cliffside path that starts from the Spiaggia Grande.

The cliffside path is a lovely walk even if you don't swim.

Path with steps; no direct vehicle access.

Centro storico

1 hour

A tangle of stairways, Positano-style fashion boutiques, ceramics and made-to-measure sandals, between Via dei Mulini and the lanes leading down to the sea.

The village can only be explored on foot: going down is easy, climbing back up takes time and energy.

Steep stairs and slopes

Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta

20 min

The dome covered in yellow, green and blue majolica tiles is Positano's symbol. Inside is the Byzantine icon of the Black Madonna.

Wear respectful clothing; the dome is best photographed from higher up in the village.

Near the beach, reached by stairs.

Punti panoramici

30 min

The most famous view opens up from the road climbing towards the main coast road, where the village looks like an amphitheatre on the sea. Higher still, the hamlet of Nocelle overlooks the whole bay.

Stop only where it is allowed: stopping along the main road itself is dangerous.

Narrow pavements and heavy traffic.

Verso Praiano

Half day

The Path of the Gods links Bomerano (Agerola) with Nocelle above Positano, with views over Praiano and Capri. Praiano, between Positano and Amalfi, is famous for its sunsets.

It is a real hike: start early, bring water and proper shoes, and check how to get back from Nocelle.

Trail with exposed sections and many steps; not suitable if you suffer from vertigo.

Consigli per foto e visite

The best light is early in the morning and at sunset, when the houses turn pink. From the sea you get the most complete view of the village.

Respect private property and don't block stairs and passages to take photos.
