AMALFI GUIDE & BOOK

Capri

The island of the Faraglioni: the Piazzetta, gardens above the sea, Anacapri and Monte Solaro. Reached by ferry or hydrofoil.

DON'T MISS

Marina Grande

The island's main port, where ferries and hydrofoils arrive. From here the funicular to Capri town, buses, taxis and boat trips depart.

At peak times the funicular queues are long: consider walking up if you are fit.

Steep walk up to the centre; the funicular is paid.

La Piazzetta

30 min

The island's living room, with its clock tower and open-air cafés: the meeting point from which the shopping streets lead towards Tragara.

A coffee at a table comes at international-lounge prices: always check the price list.

Faraglioni

1–2 hours

The three famous limestone stacks off the south-east coast. The best view is from the Belvedere di Tragara; by sea you can pass under the arch of the middle stack.

Walk to the Belvedere from the Piazzetta along a mostly level path between villas and gardens.

Giardini di Augusto

30–45 min

Terraced gardens with views over the Faraglioni and the hairpin bends of Via Krupp, the path carved into the rock that leads down to Marina Piccola.

Via Krupp has been closed for long periods due to rockfall risk: check on site whether it is open.

Paid admission; paths with a few steps.

Anacapri

2–3 hours

The island's second town, quieter and more genuine: Axel Munthe's Villa San Michele, the church of San Michele with its majolica floor and white houses.

Reach it by bus or taxi from Marina Grande or Capri town.

Monte Solaro

1–2 hours

The island's highest point (589 m). From Anacapri a single-seat chairlift climbs to the top, with views over the whole Gulf and the Amalfi Coast.

In strong winds the chairlift may be suspended; choose a clear day.

Open single-seat chairlift: not suitable for everyone.

Gite panoramiche in barca

1–2 hours

A boat trip around the island shows caves, natural arches and the Faraglioni up close. Entry to the Blue Grotto depends on sea conditions and may be suspended.

Amalfi New Service boats do not depart from Capri: our tours start from Amalfi.
