AMALFI GUIDE & BOOK

Amalfi

The ancient Maritime Republic: Sant'Andrea Cathedral, the lanes of the old town, the paper mills of the Valle dei Mulini and Ravello just a few kilometres away.

DON'T MISS

Duomo di Sant'Andrea

Duomo di Sant'Andrea

45–60 min

The polychrome façade towers over Piazza Duomo from the top of its staircase. The complex includes the 13th-century Cloister of Paradise and the crypt holding the relics of Saint Andrew.

Go early in the morning: the staircase is quieter and the light on the façade is at its best.

Wide staircase without ramps; the museum complex has an entrance fee.

Centro storico

Centro storico

1 hour

From Piazza Duomo, with its Fontana de Cape 'e Ciucci, the main street climbs between shops selling lemons and paper. On the seafront stand the old Arsenals of the Republic.

Step off the main street: the covered passages and side stairways are the most authentic part.

Pedestrian centre on a gentle slope, with many steps in the side lanes.

Atrani

1 hour

One of Italy's smallest villages, set at the mouth of the Dragone just past Amalfi. Its intimate little square opens straight onto the beach.

You can walk there from Amalfi along the coast road: watch the traffic where the pavement is narrow.

Stretch on the main road with a narrow pavement; many steps in the village.

Museo della Carta

45 min

Housed in an old paper mill in the Valle dei Mulini, it tells the story of Amalfi's handmade 'bambagina' paper with original machinery that still works.

Walk on up the main street beyond the Cathedral; combine the visit with a stroll into the valley.

Steadily uphill road; paid admission.

Valle delle Ferriere

Half day

A nature reserve behind Amalfi: a trail among streams, small waterfalls and the ruins of old ironworks, in a humid microclimate where a very rare fern grows.

Hiking shoes and water are essential; avoid the hottest hours and the days after heavy rain.

Hike on a path with steps and uneven ground, not suitable for pushchairs.

Escursioni in Costiera

Amalfi is the ideal starting point to explore the coast: along the Amalfi Drive or by sea, towards Positano, Praiano, Furore and coves reachable only by boat.

Our scooters, Vespas, cars and boat tours depart from here: book ahead in the summer months.

The coast road is narrow and winding: drive carefully.

Ravello

2–3 hours

Perched above Amalfi, it is the city of music: Villa Rufolo with its gardens and Villa Cimbrone with the Terrace of Infinity.

Go up from Amalfi by bus, taxi or one of our vehicles; parking in town is limited.

Mountain road with hairpin bends; villas with entrance fees and sloping paths.
